Dinos Come Alive for Students!

Almost 100 students between 3-12 years old came face to face with life-size, moving & roaring dinosaurs. The kids were invited to visit the DINOS ALIVE exhibit at the National Science Center (runs daily until May 2011).
Upon seeing the life-size robotic Brachiosaurus and T-Rex some of the younger pre-schoolers started crying and refused to continue with the tour. Luckily after much convincing that they weren't real, they agreed to continue on :)
Can't blame them as these kids never learned about dinosaurs back in Myanmar. To them these extinct creatures were like ferocious monsters.
After overcoming their initial fears (apparently one boy peed in his pants, poor fella) they enjoyed the rest of the exhibit and spent several hours playing with the interactive experiments and displays at the main Science Hall.
The hungry kids were then treated to pizza and chicken nuggets before they went home with some amazing memories. Thanks to Total Sports Asia who sponsored the tickets and transport.

HeArt Launches New Items at Christmas Bazaars

Last week we launched HeArt's latest products at the American Women's Bazaar and the Austrian-German-Swiss Christmas Bazaar. We had a very good response and many people were attracted to our vibrant colors.

We also had many kids supporting us by buying the wine bottle decorations as gifts for their parents. It was inspiring to see kids being so charitable at a young age. There were also several generous people who made donations or paid more than the selling price.

The AGS Christmas Bazaar

Thanks to everyone who bought from us and also to the teachers who volunteered their time to help at the booths. A big thank you also to Martina and the AGS Bazaar for giving us a table for free. In total we raised RM2000 from the 2 bazaars alone and hopefully we can raise more in the weeks to come. New HeArt Items for Sale!

Last year we launched the HeArt project to raise funds for the two Kachin schools. This year we have some new items for sale which are also designed by the students. All proceeds will go towards supporting the two schools.

The schools have lost a few of their regular donors so they are in need of financial help to pay for the students' meals, rental, electricity, etc.

We hope to raise enough money through the HeArt project to sustain both schools. Please help support this and also spread the word around. Thanks a lot!

KRC Emerge Champs at Faisal Cup 2010

The KRC (Kachin Refugee Community) schools of New Generation and Victory were sweeping up trophies at the Faisal Cup in September. The U16 Boys football team won the championship trophy, the U14 were 1st runner-up and the U10 team 2nd runner-up.

The girls were not to be outdone, in Netball they won 1st runner-up for the U16 team and the U10 and U14 teams won the championship titles!

New Generation Pre-schoolers Forced to Relocate

A few weeks ago the New Generation pre-school was given a week to clear out of their current school premises as the building had been sold and was going to be converted into a hotel. Volunteers had even spent time and money to paint the school walls and rooftop so it was with a heavy heart that the pre-schoolers had to move.

Thank God the teachers managed to find a new location for the school which is only a few minutes walking distance from the old place. However the monthly rental is a lot more expensive at RM1800 per month as compared to RM1400. We hope to raise more funds for the school through sales of the children's artwork during the upcoming Christmas Bazaars.

On the brighter side the children no longer have to walk past the drug addicts who used to gather at the dimly lit stairwell everyday. The place used to be littered with used needles and other drug paraphernalia, definitely not a conducive place for them to study. Hopefully the new school premises will be a lot safer for the pre-schoolers.

Football Clinic with Manchester United Legend - Bryan Robson

In August this year over a dozen students were lucky enough to be invited for an exclusive football clinic with legendary ManU player Bryan Robson. He was the longest serving captain with Manchester United and was also the Manager of Sheffield Utd.

Robson was in town to promote TM's partnership with ManU as the official telco partner. He spent over an hour in the blistering heat to run the kids through some football drills. The fun event was held at the football field of Garden International School.

It was a great experience for the children and a perfect warm up for their Faisal Cup tournament in September. Thanks to Total Sports Asia for inviting the students. It was a day they'll never forget!

World Cup Fever!

This summer the students were all excited about the World Cup in South Africa so it was only fitting that the top students in both New Generation and Victory Schools receive exclusive and original World Cup merchandise for their hard work. Students Get New Uniforms

Pre-school students at the New Generation and Victory Schools were elated to finally have their very own school uniforms. For many of these refugee students education is a privilege and not a birthright and they treasure the few hours they get each day in their makeshift schools. New Generation and Victory are just a few of the refugee schools which are being run by the Myanmar refugee community. UNHCR helps to fund some of these schools while others are funded by generous donors and church groups.

Students at New Generation and Victory were able to raise funds for their schools through sales of My Beautiful Myanmar which was launched 2 years ago. Through the book they raised enough money to donate RM25,000 to World Vision Myanmar in aid of Cyclone Nargis victims back in their homeland. The rest of the money collected has been used for school supplies, AV equipment, meals, school trips, events, etc. In fact it was through these funds that they managed to make the school uniforms.

Every student who gets relocated to a new country is also given a gift of RM100 each. Quite a few of the children whose stories are in the book are now enjoying new lives in countries like the US, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia.

Food Donors Welcome

Aside from clothes, household items & toys the Kachin refugee community are always in need of basic food supplies and toiletries. There are also many mothers who cannot afford the high cost of baby formula. If you are in a position to donate such items do drop an email to me at my.beautiful.myanmar@gmail.com

Recently we received a generous food donation from Debora who has been a regular contributor to the community. The food will be used for the refugee students' meals and also distributed among the neediest families. Thanks so much Debora!

Jumble Sale Raises Almost RM2500

Over the weekend close to RM2500 (USD800) was raised through a charity jumble sale. All the items were donated and proceeds will go to the two Kachin refugee schools (New Generation & Victory). The unsold items were donated to the refugee community.

Thanks so much to all those who donated their 2nd hand items (and some were brand new and unused!). Thanks also to all those who bought our items at the sale. The money raised will be used for school supplies, meals for the students and will also help supplement salaries for the refugee teachers, many of whom work for minimum wages.

Charity Jumble Sale at IBU Bazaar Sat May 8th

Alice Smith's Interact Club Raises Funds for Refugee Schools

A few weeks ago a group of Interact Club students from the Alice Smith School paid a visit to the New Generation School. The students were from all over the world including the Netherlands, UK, USA and Fiji. The NG students were delighted to watch a slideshow presentation of what life was like in these different countries. The boys were especially attentive when it came to listening to the pretty Alice Smith girls! :)

The group had dropped by to present over RM4000 to the schools. This money was raised by the Interact Club through selling of candy canes over Christmas and roses over Valentine's Day. The students also raised close to RM900 in December selling some of the HeArt products of which all proceeds go towards the Kachin schools.

Thanks so much to Myrthe and her friends from the Interact Club. These gals have such big hearts, their school should be very proud of these future leaders! Myrthe and her mom have also donated many items to be sold at a charity Jumble Sale, all proceeds going to the schools as well.

I'm sure the Kachin students look forward to their next visit!

Myanmar Showcase at International Bazaar

Recently the students from New Generation Learning Center had the opportunity to showcase Myanmar at Garden International School's annual International Bazaar. It was the first time Myanmar was featured at this event. Many students, and some adults, didn't even know where Myanmar was! This year's theme was on the 5 senses of sight, sound, taste, smell and touch. On display were colorful photos of Myanmar's famous landmarks, facts and figures about the country and population, handcrafts, clothing, school books, games, etc. There was also traditional Myanmar music courtesy of budding musicians Raymond & Dominic. There was free food sampling of Myanmar delicacies and the popular spicy dish "balawchong" was also available for sale.

The highlight was when the students performed their traditional Kachin dance on stage. It was a great way to share more about Myanmar's beautiful and diverse culture. Best of all the students and teachers had a chance to visit over 40 countries in one day! They enjoyed themselves visiting all the other countries' booths, sampling the food and finding out more about the culture. Maybe some of them might get resettled in those countries one day...

Thanks to all the students and teachers who helped out and to GIS for giving us the opportunity to share Myanmar's culture with the students.

Kidz Zone & Kenny Rogers Treat

42 kids between 4 and 10 yrs old had a "ball" of a time playing at Kidz Zone in Hartamas Shopping Center. It was the first time they'd ever been to a kids' play center and they didn't want to leave! After an exhausting 1.5 hours (for the adults at least!) we escorted the sweaty and hyperactive kids over to Kenny Rogers for a sponsored lunch courtesy of its proprietor Ms Jenny Chang. They closed the entire restaurant just for the kids.

It was the first time the kids were using forks and knives instead of their usual spoons to feed themselves so you can imagine it was a rather interesting albeit frustrating experience for the hungry kids. For many of them it was also their first experience eating mashed potatoes and coleslaw so some were understandably suspicious at first :)

Fun Day at Selangor Pewter

A busload of refugee students and teachers were treated to a fun and educational trip to Selangor Pewter's headquarters in Setapak. They were guided through the mini museum of artefacts and history of Selangor Pewter. They were also given a tour of the factory and witnessed firsthand how pewter products are meticulously handcrafted. Some even tried their hands at it and quickly realised it was alot harder than it looked!

Finally the kids had a blast at the School of Hard Knocks (rather ironic!) where they learned how to mould their own pewter bowl. The kids were thrilled to keep the bowls and aprons as a wonderful souvenir from their day out.

After the tour the kids were personally served light snacks and refreshments by Datin Paduka Chen Mun Kuen (Director of Selangor Pewter and grandaughter of founder Yong Koon) and Grace Yong (wife of Selangor Pewter's GM). It was a perfect way to end a fun day as the kids had certainly worked up an appetitie after all their hard "knocking".

You'll be happy to know that 13 year old Jenny who drew the tiger (featured in the 2010 HeArt calender and Jungle cards), was recently relocated to New York with her family. She had been in Malaysia for more than 3 years. I've seen Jenny blossom from a shy 9 yr old to a confident and beautiful teenager. She was even selected to appear in their Kachin community's 2010 calender as one of the models. I'm sure she'll do very well in New York as will her brother Peter who aspires to be an engineer so he can return to Myanmar to build homes for the poor people.

Lulu Leaves on a Jetplane...

A few weeks ago we said goodbye to one of the most amazing women I've ever met. Lulu was finally relocated to the US (Des Moines, Iowa) in December after spending 3 years in Malaysia.

Lulu founded New Generation and Victory Schools almost 3 years ago and has been instrumental in helping her Kachin community receive aid and education. To me she is the true leader of her community and many would attest to that.

She is a tireless worker who has sacrificed so much for her people. She spent many nights staying up late to help her friends or just lend a sympathetic ear. She would put others first before herself especially the children whom she loved and helped to educate. One of the most amazing things about her was her ability to manifest positive things to happen. Whenever she had a need for the school, for the children or for her community, she would pray diligently and with great persistence. Within a few days someone would donate the items she prayed for or give a donation at a time in need. Her faith is unbelievably strong and her intentions are always noble.

It was with a heavy heart that Lulu left for Des Moines Iowa on December 15th as she was sad to leave behind the schools she had built and the community she patiently helped to take care of. But she also left confident that her legacy will continue in the capable hands of her successor, Teacher Grace and all the other great Kachin teachers whom she trained personally. It was a tearful farewell party and all the teachers and volunteers took turns to share their experience with Lulu and some even sang songs to her which got the whole room reaching for the tissue box!

I don't think she realises just how much she has done for her people especially the children she has helped to educate and empower. Lulu will always be remembered as a great and inspirational leader and is a role model for so many of us.

We wish you all the best in Iowa and look forward to more updates from you. I know you'll be just as great a leader in Des Moines as you were here. God bless you always!

HeArt-felt Gratitude

A giant THANK YOU to everyone who purchased HeArt merchandise. I am very pleased to announce that since sales started about a month and a half ago we have managed to raise almost RM19,000 for New Generation & Victory Schools!!

We had several generous companies buying a few hundred calenders to give away as premiums (thanks Marcus, Sheen & Lee Chin!). We also made some great sales at the various Christmas bazaars. Lauren did a fantastic job with the display and presentation (see photos here). She and Donna raised RM3177 at the American Bazaar. We also did well at the German Bazaar and various other international school bazaars & art markets (thanks Shannon). I would like to extend our gratitude to the Interact Club of Alice Smith School for helping us raise more than RM800 at their bazaar (Myrthe & Hideko you girls rock!).

It was a busy year end with all the bazaars but it was well worth every effort. All proceeds from the sales will go towards the 2 refugee schools involved in the project. It will be used for school rental, food, school supplies, art materials, school fees and other basic necessities for the refugee children.

The children, as you can imagine, are incredibly proud to be a part of this project and feel empowered that they are able to help raise funds for their schools.

Christmas Treat from Lions Club

The Lions Club of Damansara Heights recently hosted almost 400 refugee students, their parents and their teachers to a huge Christmas party held at DUMC's Dream Center.

Mr. Onny Maathai (President of the Lions Club D'sara Heights) and his team of "Lions" including volunteers from HELP Institute, made sure everyone had a great time. There was lots of great food sponsored by Ahli Maju, presents and Christmas party favours, and even a fantastic performance by an 11-yr old magician. The kids were entertained by clowns and loved the balloon sculpture and face painting done by volunteers. Later on the students from New Generation & Victory Schools performed some songs, dances and even a catwalk show with the youngest "model" being only 5 years old!

It was a great evening and many of the parents expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate Christmas with their children.

HeArt is a non-profit group comprising local and expat volunteer teachers from the two Kachin refugee schools. The group aims to raise funds for the schools through selling marketable products using original artwork from the students. There is alot of artistic talent among the 200 plus students. The kids feel honoured and proud that they are able to raise funds for their education through their own talents and effort. This is so empowering for them.

HeArt is planning additional future projects including art contests and exhibitions among the refugee community.

The Da Vinci Experience

40 refugee students and teachers were recently invited by the organizers of the Da Vinci - The Genius exhibition to witness firsthand the amazing works of Leonardo Da Vinci.

It was the first time the students and teachers had ever been to a Science Center (where the exhibition is being held). Just at the entrance alone they were in awe of the huge aquarium tunnel and even asked if the fish were real!

They spent about an hour exploring the main part of the Science Center and had alot of fun with the interactive exhibits.

The kids had been learning about Da Vinci in school so when it was time for the tour they were so fascinated and asked many questions. The exhibition guides were very informative and explained through the teachers about his works. They spent about 2 hours at the exhibition.

"I really enjoyed it. I thought Da Vinci was only an artist but he was a great genius. If people in the past like him could create such amazing things then why can’t we as well? It really inspired me.” - Raymond, 15 yrs old

Makeover Dream for Refugee Women

A few weeks ago we organized a photo shoot for seven Kachin refugee women. The aim was to create awareness for the refugee community and to tell the stories of these courageous and strong women. More importantly the experience empowered them in a way they have not felt in a long time. Which gal wouldn't be delighted at a make over and photo session by one of the country's top photographers?

Zung of The Photoz (http://www.thephotoz.com/) and his dedicated team donated their time to do the shoot. The shots turned out amazing as expected from a master like Zung. Thanks also to Caterpillar (http://www.caterpillar.com.my)/ for hosting the venue. It was such a fun day for everyone including the volunteers. Thanks so much for all your help: Christabel, Sania, Carmen, Deborah, Paulee, Jessica, Ann, Michelle and of course Yvonne our resident stylist :)

Got Milk?

Dutch Lady recently donated 50 cartons of its nutritional YES drink to the refugee schools. Hopefully this will lead to more support from them in the future. Muffins for Everyone!

Last week the kids at New Generation school were treated to yummy homemade muffins. One of the school's regular supporters and donors, Sharon, lovingly made 100 muffins for the kids. Mind you, she's pregnant and her baby's due in a few weeks! The kids were so happy and prayed for her safe delivery. For many of the kids it was the first time they were eating muffins... all the best for a smooth and happy delivery Sharon and thanks for your continued support!

The kids later worked off their muffins by doing a fun yoga session with a real yoga instructor!

Kachin Schools Shine at Faisal Cup

It was a day to remember for the Kachin schools when they took home 5 trophies at last Saturday's Faisal Cup including the Championship Trophy for the U16 football team and the U15 Girls' Netball team. It was the first time that the schools had ever won a championship and they were thrilled!
They were definitely one of the best dressed with their bright yellow and red jerseys complete with their own KRC logo. Let's not forget their fancy new boots courtesy of TSA!

The kids played their hearts out and won almost every one of their matches. The final results were Champion U16, 2nd place for U14 & U10, Champion U15 Girls Netball and 2nd U18 Girls Netball.

Congratulations to all the kids who played as well as to all their friends and teachers who came out in full force to cheer for their schools.

Best Boot Forward

45 students from the Kachin schools were thrilled to try on their new football boots courtesy of Total Sports Asia. Prior to this many of them were wearing slippers and even playing barefoot (ouch!).

A Dream Come True!

On Saturday 100 Kachin students from New Generation & Victory Schools and 30 teachers and volunteers were treated to a fun day at the beach. The Methodist Center in Port Dickson gave us a good discount to use their beautiful sprawling premises for the day.

The beach trip was promised to them over a year ago for their great work on My Beautiful Myanmar. Most of the kids have never seen the ocean before so they were thrilled and excited about the trip.

After a yummy breakfast of homemade nasi lemak the kids wasted no time jumping into the water under the watchful eyes of the adult volunteers and teachers. Once in the water it was hard to get them out and the only way was to entice them with a delicious hot lunch sponsored by Jenny Chang who owns a Kenny Rogers franchise.

After lunch was Games time and everyone had a blast watching their friends do Michael Jackson impersonations, breakdancing and singing. All that talent has convinced us to stage a Myanmar Idol contest among the students! One of the girls, Ellie, even did a perfect Tamil song and dance while another sang a Korean song.

There were lots of prizes to be won, not to mention sweets galore thanks to Jenny who brought 2 large pinatas filled to the brim with assorted candies. The kids went MAD!

After more than 7 hours in PD it was time to go home, the kids were exhausted and sunburned but exhilirated from a truly fun day at the beach. I'm sure for many of them it will be a day they'll remember for the rest of their lives!

Thanks to everyone who helped and supported this trip, you can't imagine how big the kids' smiles were that day thanks to your time and contributions.

It's Beach Time!!

Finally after waiting for over a year the students from New Generation & Victory Schools are getting their much awaited and much deserved beach trip which was promised to them for their great effort in My Beautiful Myanmar.

Although there are 160 students we can only accommodate 96 students this time around, we'll plan some other fun activity for the younger ones. As you can imagine the kids are excited beyond words. Most of them have never seen the ocean! The kids will be going to Port Dickson for the day. Stay tuned for updates on the trip and lots of photos!!! Woo-hoo!!!

Football Clinic for Kachin Kids

Last Saturday a group of expat friends working in Malaysia volunteered their time and expertise to run a 2hr long football clinic for the Kachin kids. The kids were coached by Stephan & Adam from Total Sports Asia (TSA), who incidentally happen to be ex-pro football players, and their German friend Profi who is a football coach in Germany. This is the first time the kids have had such "professional" coaching and they were thrilled. As for the 'coaches", they thoroughly enjoyed themselves despite getting sunburnt in the scorching heat. Stephan said it was great to see the smiles on their faces so much so they're running another training session this Sunday. Way to go guys!

It was heartwarming to see photos of the kids. Some didn't even have shoes to play in while others wore slippers! The good news is TSA has come to their rescue by sponsoring 45 pairs of football boots for their tournament as well as providing training equipment like balls, bibs & cones. Thank you TSA for your great support and help!

Munchy's Brings Smiles to Kachin Kids

Munchy's has generously donated hundreds of boxes of assorted biscuits which will keep the Kachin kids from New Generation & Victory Schools happy for the next few months. This is the second time Munchy's is donating biscuits to the kids. The biscuits are distributed to the students during their snack time. The faces on the kids speak volumes on their gratitude and appreciation to Munchy's. In addition, the Munchy's staff have joined together to help the community by buying rice cookers, water jugs, etc as well as treating the kids to McDonald's. They also plan to give the kids a movie treat.

Handmade Jewellery by Kachin Women

A group of women from the Kachin refugee community are making beaded jewellery to raise funds for themselves and their community. 50% of the proceeds go towards the women involved in the project while the rest goes towards the Kachin Women & Children's Fund which provides funds for emergency needs like food & medical expenses. The project kicked off early this year and has so far raised almost RM3000 in sales.

The women are also looking for old jewellery so they can recycle the materials. In addition to jewellery the women also make handphone pouches, traditional bags, purses, shawls, etc.

Myanmar migrants stuck in Malaysia detention camps

SEPANG: A growing number of immigrants from Myanmar are ending up stuck, often for months, in crowded detention centers in Malaysia designed to hold people for only a few weeks.
Almost 2,800 Myanmarese were detained at camps in July, more than double the 1,200 in January, partly because of a crackdown on human trafficking, a step-up in raids and a slow economy that leaves the migrants without jobs.
People from Myanmar, a desperately poor country with a military junta, are now the biggest group among the 7,000 foreigners at detention centers in Malaysia.
At a center near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, some 120 men sat in neat rows on the floor.
Many had their legs drawn to their chests, and all were barefoot. There was not enough space and not enough bedding.
"There is no soap for taking a shower, nothing. They don't give us anything," said Kyaw Zin Lin, 23, who said he fled to avoid being drafted into the Myanmar army.
"Every day we eat the food just to survive. ... They treat us like animals."
"It's very difficult to stay here," said Aung Kuh The, a pale 26-year-old.
"We have got a lot of problems. Some people, you know, we want to see the doctor but we don't have the chance."
One reason for the rise in detainees is a crackdown on trafficking.
A report published in April by the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations cited firsthand accounts of Myanmarese who said immigration officers turned them over to traffickers.
That practice has all but stopped, Myanmar community leaders in Malaysia say.
Now, though, the Myanmarese are trapped in detention.
The Myanmar embassy often takes six months to register its citizens for deportation and charges them 620 ringgit ($180), much more than neighboring Indonesia.
By contrast, detainees from other countries are typically deported within a week.
Calls to the Myanmar embassy were repeatedly put on hold and then unanswered.
About half the Myanmarese - those fleeing persecution - may qualify for UN refugee status, but that process takes up to four months.
The others are economic migrants. Some 140,000 Myanmarese work in Malaysia, but foreign workers who are laid off lose the right to stay.
Some Myanmarese have spent more than six months in crowded, dirty detention centers.
One man, whose brother was in detention for four months, said he would rather be sold to traffickers from whom he could buy his freedom.
"I prefer to be trafficked," said the man, who would only be identified by his nickname, Ryan, to protect his relatives in Myanmar.
"I don't mind paying 2,000 ringgit ($570)."
Five of Malaysia's 13 detention centers are overcrowded; four of the five have large Myanmarese populations, according to the immigration department.
Journalists from The Associated Press accompanied the human rights group Amnesty International on a rare visit recently to three detention centers just south of Kuala Lumpur, the country's biggest city.
At the Lenggeng Detention Depot, 1,400 people are crammed into dormitories meant for 1,200. Of them about 300 are from Myanmar.
Hundreds of men jostle each other for room in the bare dormitories. One sleeps on a stone ledge in a bathroom.
Each dormitory is fenced by wire mesh and barbed wire, giving detainees just a few meters (feet) of space for walking.
"The detention centers we saw fell short of international standards in many respects, as the immigration authorities themselves acknowledge," said Michael Bochenek of Amnesty International.
"It's a facility of such size that infectious diseases are communicated readily."
Saw Pho Tun, a refugee community leader, said some immigration officers have singled out Myanmarese detainees for rough treatment, beating them and not allowing them medical assistance.
Immigration officials deny beating detainees and say everyone has access to medical care.
On July 1, detainees at another center flung their food trays and damaged some of the mesh fence.
Immigration officials blamed the riot on frustration about having to stay so long, but detainees say they rioted because they were afraid of abuse.
Most of the blocks have now been shut for repairs, so more than 1,000 detainees - including 700 from Myanmar - were transferred to other already crowded centers.
Abdul Rahman Othman, the director general of the Immigration Department, said he was taking steps to prevent his officers from being "entangled" in trafficking syndicates.
He said officers would be rotated to different posts every three years and have a buddy system to supervise each other.
"Ninety-nine percent of us in immigration are good people," he said, denying the problem is widespread.
Police arrested five officers on trafficking allegations last month.
They say their investigations revealed immigration officials took Myanmar immigrants to the Thai border and sold them for up to 600 ringgit ($170) to traffickers.
The traffickers then told the migrants to pay 2,000 ringgit ($570) for their freedom, or they would be forced to work in the fishing industry, police said.

Sweet Dreams for the Kids!

Tonight 250 Burmese refugees including 160 students from the Kachin refugee schools will be sleeping on their brand new Dreamland mattresses and bed sheets.

Thanks to generous donors we managed to raise enough funds to order 250 2-inch mattresses for the Kachin community. A big thank you to Dreamland for giving us a great deal at RM35.50 per piece! (Thanks Lisa for the contact).

I was there to witness the excitement and joy on the kids' faces when the giant Dreamland truck drove up in front of their makeshift school. The kids formed a human chain and in less than 10 minutes all 100 mattresses were unloaded from the truck and stacked away nicely in their tiny flat. Meanwhile in a different location students from the other Kachin refugee school also received 150 mattresses.

The photos speak for themselves. Isn't it amazing how something as simple as a mattress can bring so much joy to a child. For many of the children it has been a long while since they've slept on a mattress, for some it will be a completely brand new experience. Imagine that...

"Namkin said she can go to church now. her daughter pass urine 3 to 4 times in a hour. she didn't go out bcoz of no diapers. Now she is not afraid to go out with her daughter and she use it for emergency going outside.

One of the ladies from PJ, her name is Mary. Last night she was crying and called me. I was frighten. Why she is crying because she is very happy & accepted your bed sheet, a bag and cloth. What she really needs for her family, she got it free. She is so touched by you and your friends helping..."

HUGGIES Galore!

Kimberley-Clark generously donated a truck load of HUGGIES diapers to the refugees. There were thousands of diapers in all sizes. The refugee families were thrilled to receive them as many can't afford the high cost of diapers and to receive such good quality diapers was a real treat. There are several children who are disabled so these diapers really go a long way to ease the stress on their caregivers.

Today I was so inspired after visiting Htu Mai. Last October when I met with her she was pale, gaunt and ready to give up on life. Between sobs she told us that her counselor said she had only 6 months left to live as her HIV was quite advanced. I told her that no one but God could determine how long she stays on this planet and she needed to WANT to live. I passed her RM250 from a generous friend in Hong Kong and told her that someone cared enough about her to want to support her every month for a year! She was immensely touched and grateful. Suddenly she didn't feel so alone anymore. I also gave her some wheatgrass powder to consume daily to alkalize her body.

9 months later Htu Mai is a picture of health with glowing skin and sparkling eyes. She used to cover her body with baggy clothes to hide her rashes but today she looked beautiful in a fitting tank top and pants with her newly dyed hair! She has obviously chosen LIFE and not just that, she now wants to become a spokesperson to encourage other HIV refugees like herself.

Htu Mai's transformation physically and emotionally is so rewarding to see as it shows how the love and support shown by people who care can truly make a difference and literally save someone's life!

Rose's family is also being helped by kind donors. The transformation within the family has been nothing short of a miracle. Last year her father who suddenly fell into a coma, was bedridden and unresponsive. Her mother Cho, was earning RM120 as a part-time cleaner to support her 4 children including the youngest who has polio and is unable to walk. Thanks to the monthly contribution of RM500 Rose's family were able to survive alot easier and have better peace of mind. Her father can now sit up and responds by smiling. I haven't visited them in a few months but I can only imagine he has improved even further.

USA Here We Come!

It was a bittersweet day today as we said farewell to 3 students who are being resettled in the US. I've been teaching Steven & James for the past 2 years and have watched them grow into fine young "men" with great leadership abilities. They've led such challenging lives, Steven was once a child slave in Burma (his story is in My Beautiful Myanmar as is James'). His father passed away when he was young and his mother remarried and left him with his grandmother. Single-handedly his grandma (almost 60 years old now) found her way to Malaysia and worked hard to bring her two grandchildren to KL. She has been their beacon of strength and hope. Today she gave a heartfelt speech thanking everyone who has helped her during her time in Malaysia and she made a beautiful beaded purse with a cross on it for me. Joy will also be going to the US, to New York! I'm excited and happy for her as I know she has the courage and wisdom to survive even New York :) The kids are happy to be relocating yet understandably sad at leaving their friends behind, many whom they consider family. I will keep in touch with their progress and give updates on this blog. Safe travels to Steven, James & Joy!

Refugees Get Healing Touch from Sandra Sweetman

Today the kids were treated to a healing session with gifted intuitive healer Sandra Sweetman (http://www.mydivineblueprint.com/) who is in Malaysia to do some workshops. She shared with them a simple story which included a special "purple coat" that they could put on whenever they felt sad or scared. A few of the older kids became emotional during the process and it was a wonderful way to empower them and help them release some of their fears and negative energies.

After working with the kids Sandra visited a few women who had serious physical ailments and did some gentle healing with them. It was truly inspiring to watch Sandra's God-given gifts healing these ladies who have been through so much emotionally, mentally & physically. Thanks so much Sandra! We hope to see you again soon!

Last week when I asked my students how many of them slept on mattresses only 1 or 2 put up their hands. For the rest, it was only a thin worn out straw mat between them and the cold hard floor. I can't imagine how uncomfortable this must be especially for the pregnant women. To make matters worse they are sandwiched together in tiny rooms.

A friend of mine who owns a mattress factory has agreed to give us a 50% discount on her foldable mattresses at RM50 each based on a minimum purchase of 100 pieces. I'm hoping and praying that there are enough generous folks out there to make this a reality and perhaps even surpass the 100 mark and provide for even more refugees. What say you guys and gals? Kachin Refugees Receive RM12,000

It was a joyous day for the Kachin womenfolk when Sherlyn, Ann & Irene dropped by to present a check for RM12,000 which was money raised from the Kaleidoscope Dance Concert. They were deeply touched by the donation. Much to their delight Sherlyn gave them a belly dancing demo and even roped a few ladies and girls in for an impromptu lesson. The ladies had alot of fun so much so that they've asked Sherlyn to return to teach them more! The ladies and kids were then treated to an afternoon spread in conjunction with World Refugee Day.

Soup Kitchen Plans for Refugees

We recently found out that some of the refugee men have resorted to eating from the garbage and sleeping on the streets as they are unable to find work. My Burmese friends feel so helpless and sorry for them. We've decided to start a soup kitchen in one of the areas hardest hit. She turns 64 years old this Friday and will celebrate yet another birthday without the freedom every human being deserves. Let's pray that this will be the last birthday she spends under house arrest and her 65th birthday will be cause for worldwide celebration when Burma is finally free.

The Reality of Boycotting Burma

I have just returned from Yangon spending 4 days visiting a few orphanages. My first trip to Burma was 25 years ago when I was only 13 years old. It was one of the most magical places I'd ever visited. I fell in love with the people and was struck by the charming colonial feel of the place. Almost every car looked like it was from the 50s and had cracked windscreens. I remember leaving my wallet, exploding with money, in a taxi. The taxi driver traced me to my hotel room to return a fully intact wallet and refused a reward. I was stunned by his honesty.

I remember being greeted like a celebrity wherever I went with hordes of children coming up to me to give me handwritten letters of friendship (and love!) Wherever my dad and I went we were treated like family and invited into homes for a meal. Watching the sun rise over 4000 pagodas in Pagan was a mystical experience as was gliding over the mist on Inle Lake in a traditional boat amidst lotus flowers.

This time around I didn't get to venture any further than Yangon and what I saw was heartbreaking.

Ever since the student uprising of 1988 the govt has used its iron fist to oppress and suppress its humble people. Universities closed for 4 years after that and now they are spread across outside the main city and are carefully monitored. There are govt spies everywhere. This has created distrust among the Burmese people.

The taxi driver who picked us up from the airport wasted no time relating all the hardships endured by his people. There was so much resentment in his voice towards his govt yet so much helplessness at any resolution. "If they come after me then I will consider leaving Burma," he confided. He said he has sleepless nights waiting for govt spies to knock on his door and haul him away like so many others have experienced. His crime - wanting a better life for himself and his family. Wanting justice and humanity for his people.

All along the ride we saw several palatial homes with chandeliers hanging from the driveway. Many new mansions are being built. Coincidentally more have sprung up after Cyclone Nargis. "The generals are rich after the cyclone." said our driver. Meanwhile thousands of farmers along the Irrawaddy still live under makeshift plastic sheets and their farms still destroyed.

When we arrived at our hotel, the taxi driver thanked us for willing to visit his country which got me thinking...

All these years Burma has been out of my radar for countries to visit as I too believed tourism there would only enrich the govt. I too wanted to send a strong message to Burma that we were not condoning their military rule and oppression of its people.

But what I witnessed in those few days was a clear message to me that I was gravely mistaken. The boycotts and sanctions on Burma have had little effect on the ruling junta. In fact they continue to bask in riches from their gems and oil trade (not to mention drug exports). As long as China & India continue to do business with them who needs the US or any other Western country for that matter. In fact the fewer tourists the better as the govt’s unjust policies will not be exposed to the world.

The biggest losers are the Burmese people. Yangon is in such a dilapidated state with once regal colonial buildings now abandoned or in dire need of a face lift. There is so much poverty on the streets and the Burmese seem to have accepted their fate. Either that or risk imprisonment.

There is only 6 hours of intermittent electricity in Yangon (excluding the embassies, hotels & military areas) and many can't afford a generator. Of course the new capital Naypyidaw has 24 hours electricity if you're willing to live in the middle of nowhere.

Cars, most of which resemble rejects from a 70's stock car race, can cost around USD30,000. Motorbikes are only reserved for govt spies to facilitate faster reporting! So the people are left to commute via bicycles or unreliable public transportation (taxis are expensive by local standards).

A handphone used to cost USD6000 but now sells at the rock bottom price of USD3000! Prepaid cards of USD50 each have just been introduced but expire after 30 days and calls range from 50 cents to 1.50 per minute. And this only works on Mhz lines not GSM. The average income is less than USD200 per month.

The queue to fill up gas can take 3 hours as the number of gas depots are limited. We had to change taxis three times one night as the taxis were all running out of gas.

Every publication is required to write down the principles of the nation which include obedience and loyalty to the government. The daily newspaper, New Light of Myanmar, is govt propaganda reporting news of the military and articles about why Burmese people should be grateful for their nation and their govt. There are constant reminders to foreigners not to interfere in the peace and stability of the nation. I was in Burma during Suu Kyi's trial and there was hardly any news on what was going on. The news in the papers was a week old!

My German husband was a very rare sight on the streets of Yangon. He drew many curious stares - suspicious ones from possible govt spies and broad grins from locals grateful at the sight of tourists.

At the romantic and charming Governor's Residence where we stayed we were 1 out of 3 rooms occupied in a hotel with 48 rooms. We had 2 waiters literally standing 3 feet behind us anticipating our every move. You could see the appreciation on their faces at our presence there. I have never experienced such attentive and warm service before.

We visited 2 very run down orphanages on the outskirts of Yangon. Of course the govt does not allow them to be called orphanages instead they are "childcare centers". The govt is wary of outside funding for these centers as they claim they are able to provide for them on their own, which sadly is not the case.

Recently a group of Caucasian volunteers visited an orphanage and govt spies reported them, the very next day the govt placed a lot of new restrictions on orphanages.

Visits to orphanages have to be done on a low profile. But it is worth every effort as it is eye-opening to see the conditions of these centers and how much the children desperately need assistance.

Despite the harsh realities of the suffering and oppression in Burma I couldn't help but feel a sense of calm and peace looking out the window of my hotel room. For all its rough edges and poverty, the inhumanity and injustice, I could still sense the strong and undying spirit of the Burmese people. I could still feel their warmth and gratitude for the little that they possessed. And that is something the Junta will ever be able to rob from them...

So my friends, perhaps it is time to rethink our rules and reasons for boycotting Burma. Are we really sending an effective message to the govt or are we merely contributing to the hardships faced by Burma's beautiful people?

When you travel to Burma you can directly contribute to the locals by shopping and eating at locally owned places or staying in privately owned hotels which actively support orphanages. All it takes is a little research and noble intentions and the rest will fall into place. Oh, and how wonderful would it be to be able to touch the lives of the underprivileged in Burma by volunteering to paint an orphanage or bring supplies for them... the people of Burma need to know that you still care about them.

Kaleidescope Charity Dance Concert Raises RM12K for Refugees!

Caterpillar Stretching Imagination (http://www.caterpillar.com.my/) and Sirocco Dance Secrets (http://www.sherlyndance.com/) recently organized a charity dance concert called Kaleidescope which featured performances from toddlers in chicken suits to sizzling belly dancers in flamboyant Egyptian costumes and burlesque dancers in sexy French bustiers! It was all for a good cause as proceeds will go towards the Kachin Refugee Women & Children's Fund.

More than RM12,000 was raised for the refugee community, alot more than what the organizers had anticipated. It was a full house and raffle tickets were sold out! Prizes ranged from dining vouchers to designer dresses!

The money will be used for basic necessities like food and daily needs for the refugees as well as medical expenses especially for the women and children. The Fund also invests in self-help projects for the women to make jewellery, bags, scarves, hand phone pouches and other future business projects for their community.

The aim of the fund if not just to contribute to the refugees but to empower and enable them to become self reliant through selling their own products.

Refugee Kids Catch Slam Dunk Action!

130 Kachin students and teachers had the time of their lives last night when they were treated to the Harlem Globetrotters game. Just the bus ride alone in a fancy large air-con bus was a thrill in itself. Thanks ever so much to the kind "lunch" sponsors who contributed towards the bus costs. In total we had 7 buses ferrying refugee kids from the Karen, Chin, Kachin & Zomi schools as well as street kids from Chow Kit and orphans from Stepping Stones. What an honour to be able to bring some joy into their lives :)

Rations Needed for Refugee Community

There are many refugee families living around KL who struggle to feed their families. Many of them are unable to find work or hardly earn enough to cover their transportation. Some have lost their sole bread winners to illness while there are women whose husbands have been detained.

We've started a Food Ration project whereby those who are in real need "register" with their local community leaders and we distribute basic food supplies like rice, oil, non-perishables, toiletries, etc on a weekly or monthly basis.

We need your support to contribute either in cash or kind to help these families. Some of the items they need on regular basis are:

rice, cooking oil, sugar, salt, canned food like beans, sardines, jam, bread, noodles, biscuits, soap, toothpaste, detergent, sanitary napkins, diapers, etc

Please contact me if you'd like to contribute towards this project. We will post photos of the contributions given out. We welcome those who'd like to donate the food themselves.

Kachin Kids Donate RM25,000 to World Vision

Kuala Lumpur, April 28th 2009

Today a cheque for RM25,000 was presented to World Vision by a very unlikely group of donors – Myanmar refugee children living in Malaysia.

“We are deeply touched by this generous donation. It is quite extraordinary to see these young children coming together to help their own people. I think this is the first time World Vision has received such a large contribution from an underprivileged group,” said Mr. Liew Tong Ngan, CEO of World Vision Malaysia.

The donation was made in conjunction with the first anniversary of Cyclone Nargis and will be used for World Vision’s rebuilding efforts in Myanmar as well as to fund their Temporary Shelter Project.

On May 2nd 2008, Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar claiming the lives of almost 150,000 people who were already struggling to survive in the poverty-stricken country. Saddened by the disaster a group of Kachin refugee children decided to embark on an ambitious but noble project to raise funds for their people back home.

Prior to the cyclone the refugee children had already been learning about the importance of helping others despite their difficult circumstances.

“The children brainstormed ideas on how they could help their people back home,” said Belle Luer, a volunteer teacher at the refugee school. “One boy suggested sending water over through a very long pipe, another said she could write letters of love and encouragement, others said they would pray for the victims and save 10 cents everyday to send over!”

The children decided to raise funds through their very own book called “My Beautiful Myanmar”. The book contains touching stories and drawings by the refugee children.

For the next two weeks the children worked tirelessly to write about why they came to Malaysia and what their hopes and dreams were. They drew pictures of what their ideal Myanmar would look like as all of them hoped to return to their homeland one day.

“It was truly amazing to see such conviction from the kids. This project has really helped to empower them and give them a sense of pride.” said Marie-Anne Yong who has been working with the children for the past two years.

Initially the books were sold through volunteers until BORDERS offered to distribute the books at their outlets in Malaysia.

“We’re hoping to raise RM100,000 and have promised the children a beach trip if we meet our target. We’re about halfway there so we hope more people will support the children’s wonderful cause by buying a book and at the same time fulfill their dream of running on the beach!” appealed Luer.

60 refugee children involved in the book were also invited by Jungle Gym and Roller Sports World for a day of play at their outlet in Bangsar Shopping Center.

HARLEM GLOBETROTTER PAYS SURPRISE VISIT TO REFUGEE STUDENTS

Kuala Lumpur - April 30, 2009

50 Myanmar refugee students could not believe their eyes when Harlem Globetrotter Anthony Blakes strutted into their classroom twirling a basketball on his finger.

Just minutes before his surprise appearance the children ranging from 6 to 18 years old had been shown video clips of the Harlem Globetrotters as part of their lesson on Teamwork.

“I was so shocked to see a real Harlem Globetrotter player in our classroom! He taught us about confidence, the importance of reading and what it takes to be a winning athlete. I will always remember his visit,” said 12-year old Raymond who learned a few ball tricks from the professional basketball player.

Blakes spent about forty minutes speaking to the children and demonstrating some of Harlem Globetrotters’ trademark ball skills.

After personally giving out signed photos of himself to every child and posing for a group photo Blakes said goodbye to the excited children who still couldn’t get enough of him.

Blakes, also known as “Buckets”, is the Advance Ambassador for the Harlem Globetrotters and travels around the world mentoring young children through their C.H.E.E.R™ For Character Program. Buckets is in town to promote the Harlem Globetrotters’ upcoming event on May 20th at the Malawati Stadium.

Earlier in the week the students from Myanmar’s Kachin state had presented a check for RM25,000 to World Vision for cyclone relief efforts in Myanmar. The money was raised through their own book called “My Beautiful Myanmar”. Books are available at all BORDERS outlets.

I've been meaning to get around to setting this up and FINALLY I'm doing it! I'd really love to share with others about the refugee community living in Malaysia.
